DEVONthink for Historians

 

As a historian, I spend a great deal of time working with documents and other archival sources. Keeping these materials organized and easily accessible is essential, which is why I turned to DEVONthink (for Mac OS). This database software helps me spend less time searching for documents and more time writing. It stores all my sources in one place and offers numerous tools for categorizing, cross-referencing, and generally organizing my materials. It has been a life saver.

That’s why I partnered with Ada Barlatt -- a business efficiency expert -- to create DEVONthink for Historians. DT4H offers courses that teach historians (and other humanities and social science researchers) how to manage their voluminous qualitative data. Our Database Foundations for Researchers course will help you learn how to manage large volumes of qualitative data using digital tools. For DEVONthink specifically, the Starting Up Guide walks you through the basics of setting up and organizing a new database. The Super User Guide builds on this foundational knowledge, explaining some of the software’s more advanced features that will really save you time and aggravation. It also teaches you how to use two new tools that we created specifically for researchers: a custom-designed SuperAnnotation template and an export script that allows you to enter citation information in your database and then send it into Bookends, a reference and bibliography management software similar to EndNote or Zotero.
